Hello! 👋
I'm Joanne.

Shortly after lockdown, I lost my dog of 15yrs, and while I'm not looking to replace him, I am looking for some feathered friends to pour my love and energy (and money) into.

My husband and I just recently completed our coop and chicken yard, and we're eagerly anticipating the arrival of our 3 pullets this week from McMurray - americauna, copper marans, whiting true green. (Hoping to get a variety of beautiful eggs from my tiny flock.)

I've been reading books and skimming the threads here, and I've learned so much already. I'm excited to learn more from this community.

Thanks for existing, and also for being free!

Welcome to BYC.
Im sorry to read about your beloved dog. That loss leaves your heart sadden. But!, I'm happy you joined BYC. Your coop has a fun paint job on it. Where are you at on this globe because you will need some preditor proofing and to increase your ventilation on your cute coop before your chicks arrive.
Please send the dimensions so, we can help you with any modification before your chicks arrive.
Remember, you will need at Least 4 sq ft. Per chicken inside (as a visual: thats four 12x12 sq ceramic tiles for each bird) and a minimum of 8 sq ft. For the outside run area. The more square ft you have over the minimum is always better. It will help decrease the pecking and squabbles between the birds.
You have come to the right place and we are Egg-cited you joined.

Thank you! We're in Los Angeles - there are some stray cats and racoons in the area, but otherwise not much else for predators.

The coop was a prefab from TSC (link incl. for dimensions). We cut some ventilation holes, but I think we may also leave the coop door open because the run seems very secure made out of hardware cloth. We don't expect to keep them enclosed solely in the coop unless it's nighttime.

Additionally, they'll also have the 15'x15' plot of yard area that the coop sits on, surrounded by 6ft of fencing. The neighboring yards have outside dogs that I'm hoping will also help to ward off predators.
