Thank you so much!start with a basic six bird flock but plan for more. Chicken math (describes when someone doesnt mean to get more chickens when they start but they end up doing so anyways) is a real thing, and it'll hit you. You can do orpingtons-they're super fluffy and do great in the cold, barred rocks- they're always super sweet and pretty soft too, wyandottes, which are just the prettiest birds no matter what you get, and Autralorps- i recommend the black ones, just gorgeous. you can really do whatever you want though, just check whatever place you're ordering from and go from what they have. good luck!
Thank you! I did a little read through on the coop forum, that's what we've planned out the most so far, but there is a ton of knowledge I didn't even think of in there.Hello and welcome to BYC!Glad you joined.
Before planning on chickens, plan and build their coop and run! You can learn a lot by reading the threads on the Coop & Run Forum and by reading highly rated articles to get an idea on the key features your coop needs to house healthy birds.
Some excellent cold weather tolerant breeds are any color Rocks, Australorps, Faverolles, Chanteclers and Orpingtons.
