Hi there!

Hi! I’m new to the forum and new to having chickens in my yard! We have 7 hens and a rooster. I have a hodge podge of breeds right now including bielefelders, Rhode Island reds, Easter eggers and a barred rock. I love how relaxing it is sitting and watching them free range. They each have their own personalities and are so special. The eggs are an added bonus! I have 3 kids and a husband, we have a cat who is very jealous of the chickens lately. I worked in the poultry processing industry for years and so I’m excited to learn this aspect of raising chickens. I’ve known about BYC for awhile because I have friends that are members but finally joined since I have my own flock!
Welcome to BYC!!

Welcome to the coop! I use the Forums and Articles tabs at the top of the page to do research. You can get lost for hours. It's nice to know you are minutes away from getting help with questions and emergencies! I always check in the "What's New" section as well at the top of this page. This way I can read how I may have a similar question or help give some advice.

Glad to meet you, and welcome to BYC. Best wishes as you move from the industrial to the home chicken raising side of things. So many of us have fallen in love with these feathered characters, just like as you have. I hope you enjoy your chickens for many years!

Here are a few of the articles that helped me out when I was just starting to keep chickens. I hope you find them helpful!

1. Predator protection for new & existing coops

2. Dealing with a muddy coop and run

3. Gardening for chickens

4. BYC Lists of Chicken Ailments and Cures

To look for articles on your own:

A. Use the SEARCH button, but use the Advanced Search choice, and select ARTICLES at the top of the box. Just enter your keyword(s) and scroll through your results!

B. I find it helpful to notice the rating and reviews. All articles are by BYC members, and all the reviews/ratings are as well. The ratings help a newbie like me sort the most useful and reliable articles.

C. You can bookmark the articles or posts you think you want to refer to again using that bookmark icon at the top of articles or posts. You can find them again by clicking on your own avatar and looking at the list of bookmarks you have built up!
