Good day (or night)!

For as long as I remember, I loved birds. They were my passion. I found them fascinating, endearing, and very, very sweet!

I have a lot of budgies - the original population was only four. Now it's up to twenty or so... and still counting! I've asked my mother what we're going to do with them, because our cages can only hold so much, and we're planning to donate them to the zoo (they have a budgie exhibit) but I'm not quite sure if they could do that. Alternatively, I guess we could give them away to relatives and family friends. Or sell them. But to who, I really have no idea.

So, yeah, I know this site is called BackYardChickens and not BackYardBudgies, so let me ramble about my chickens a bit.

We originally bought two pullets, named Yin and Yang (their baby picture is my avatar!). I think they were about 2 weeks old at the time, but I'm not quite sure. In any case, they grew up to be such fine hens.

Our uncle soon brought us six other chickens. We named them Almonds, Tundra, Halcyon (Cyon), Equinox (Ekkie), Mama Mia, and Presley. Unfortunately, Almonds passed away from some sort of sickness at a young age, and just last month, Ekkie was killed by a small bird of prey. Mama Mia... well, she passed away mysteriously. We just found her in the coop like that.

Cyon, Tundra, and Presley are doing just fine, though. Right now, Cyon is hatching a batch of eggs, and some of them, according to my parents, aren't even hers - they're Tundra's! Who, by the way, is so adorable.

Funny story. Ekkie and Cyon are silkies, and when we first got them, they looked exactly the same. Our uncle told us they were both female, so we just called them "the twins." Imagine our surprise when Ekkie started crowing and developing a darker sort of coloring - that's when we finally gave them proper names.

Ekkie mated with Tundra, but I'm not quite sure what breed Tundra is. I suspect she's a Pekin chicken, but I'm not sure. But, we incubated the eggs Tundra laid, and now we have three hatched chicks and another one on their way!

And, uh, yeah. I just love talking about my birds, haha.

It's good to finally register. I've been eyeing this site for a bit now and got a lot of information from it. So, thanks all, and I'm glad to be here!

I LOVE birds too! Chickens started it off for me, I think, and then about 7 months ago I got 1 budgie but am looking for a budgie-friend for her. Any taming tips!? Pepe (my budgie) is a pet store bird, so I understand she may never become tame, and she has made HUGE progress, but just wondering if you have any tips. :) I have 23 chickens...started out with wanting 8. :)

Thank you for the welcome! And wow, 23 chickens is a lot. Where do you keep them all?

As for budgie training tips, I used to be so keen on training our budgies. But unfortunately they paid more attention to each other (and themselves, haha) instead of me. So if you're training a budgie, I think you'd have to either separate one from the others for each training session or wait until she's tame before buying another one. And when you're actually taming the budgie, just talk to her at first like a friend and maybe offer her some treats, like millet. Then try hand feeding her and gaining her trust through that. And since you had her for 7 months, I think she's pretty much used to you now, so that could work in your favor, haha.

Sometimes I ask myself the same question.

I just have a pretty large chicken coop and several runs.

That is one reason I got 1 budgies, so I could train/bond with it, and once it liked me get another so that they might pay a LITTLE attention for me. She is used to me, tweets/sings when I'm in the room squawks for attention/and likes for me to me in the room with her, but NO HANDS! She hates hands. :p I think she is just traumatized from being looked at in the store and not being hand tamed at a young age. Oh well!

Am I allowed to ask if you live in a rural, urban, or suburban area? My parents are getting pretty worried, since our chicken population might grow fast, and in the place we live in, I'm not sure if people would like that. At the very least we'll be getting some weird looks, haha.

And yeah, hands are a HUGE no-no for my budgies. But my chickens (Yang particularly) always run up to me and crouch down and lets me pet her. I'm not quite sure if it's because she's scared or what, and sometimes she fluffs up after I pet her for a few moments. And if she's scared, I'm not quite sure why she does it every day haha.

Thank you both for the links and the welcomes! I'll definitely check them out. I appreciate the help!

I live in the country. Haha even I get weird looks. Funny story...First, two things. 1: I keep my chicks in the laundry room for a month before moving them out. 2: Most of the people I know are country folk. :p Well, this one lady came to my house while I had my chicks in my laundry room...She is from a big city. When I told her I had chicks in the house...she just about fainted. XD After she asked if they were alive. :p

Ah, gotcha! I'm in a suburban area, so it's not too bad. Haha! People still look at me funny when I say I have chickens, though. They have dogs and cats... but we have chickens. Now how awesome is that?

Chicks in your laundry room? Sounds like a place I need to visit so I can take lots of pictures. There's nothing cuter than chicks on a fluffy towel, or just chicks in general. At least in my opinion. :)
