I ordered a mixed flock consisting of a buff orpington, an australorp, a barred plymouth rock, an easter egger, a red laced wyandotte, and 2 polish. I am considering adding a white cochin, but not convinced yet as i already have the 2 polish as unreliable layers.

At one time or another, I have had all of those breeds (except that my Wyandotte was silver laced, my polish were Golden Polish and my Cochins were Buff) and I like them all. My Cochins were not good layers. My Polish weren't bad layers, but their eggs were on the small side. The rest of the group were good layers with the best being the Black Australorps.

Are your buffs Buff Orpingtons?

I'm trying to get a mix of docile, quiet, large-bodied, a few decent layers, & dang it all if I couldn't help myself I just ADORE the way the Polish look! They are so quirky & cute. Mine are going to be silver laced & Golden laced Polish. Oh, and my Wyandotte is actually called a Golden Laced, not a Red Laced. I am altogether too tempted to start too big right now, and trying to resist the urge of adding 5 more to my order .

Actually what you have are hybrids, not breeds. ) But you're right, those hybrids are all good layers.
