Hello, everyone! I go by TXGranny, and am fairly new to the chicken world. Back just before Easter I bought 18 chicks - RI Reds, with the idea of having fresh eggs. Did a bit of reading and researching first, and have to admit that hubby grew up around chickens, so he provided a good bit of knowledge for me. At first, I actually kept the chicks in a deep, 4' long tub...in my den! It was pretty chilly out then, and besides the chicks were precious! We had an old chicken house that needed remodeling out on the back of the property, so we got it fixed up by the time the chicks were ready to move into their own place!! Then not long after, we got 4 more chickens...a guy in town decided he didn't want to keep chickens any more and just turned them out in the alley. So...I have 22 chickens - 21 hens and a rooster I've named Cogburn.

I have a broody hen who is sitting on about 12 eggs. How long should it take for them to hatch? This is one scenario I wasn't prepared for yet!

Oh, yeah. We live in W Texas, and have about 2.5 acres. We have a large garden, and are still gathering okra, peppers, eggplant and tomatoes. We also have green beans, zucchini and acorn squash that are near to producing. I plan to use the compost from the chicken yard to help the garden grow! It's me, my hubby, and our 16 yr old grandson (he likes to do the tractor work for us!)

I look forward to reading all the good info here, and learning lots more about my ladies and gent! I'm really enjoying them!

it's about 21 days from start till eggs hatch give or take a day or two.

Thanks! I started reading a long thread about hatching with a broody hen. Wow! So much to learn!

My hen started sitting about 3 weeks ago, but I didn't actually note the date. And other hens have definitely added to the nest, but I'm afraid I've waited too long to move her now. I'll give her a few more days, then will have to go out one night and get hubby to help lift her out while I check the eggs. I think there are 12 eggs under her.

We're going to work on setting up a separate area for her and the chicks. I'm getting excited!!

Glad you joined us! Good luck with the hatch and if you get a moment between the broody adventures, check out our gardening forum,
www.TheEasyGarden.com also. Enjoy!

Wow! So many diverse locations! Thanks for the welcome, everyone!

I do plan to check out the garden site, also! My two big interests - gardening and learning to raise chickens.

My broody still doesn't have any hatchlings. I want hubby to help hold the hen up so I can candle the eggs. Not sure what is going on! Sure hope we get at least a few little ones!

Been working on taxes, but am about freed up to get on here and do some interesting reading!!

Thanks, guys!
