So, one of my chickens (Penelope) has sour crop, and I’ve been giving her nystatin that I got from the vet, for the past nine days.

I have manually emptied her crop and gradually tried giving her soft food, as well as been keeping probiotics and electrolytes in her water.

When I got home from work tonight, I noticed that her crop felt squishy and decided to empty it, and suddenly during that the water came out of her eyes, as well as her mouth.

Now, she has been breathing through her mouth, and I’ve been looking online to see if I should not give her water tonight.

I work 12 hrs tomorrow at my job and I have absolutely no way to really watch her tomorrow, and I don’t have anyone close to me who can.

I have two other chickens who are perfectly healthy and happy, so this is strictly w/ her (even when she was a baby, one of her wings lacked as much feather) so, unfortunately I could tell immediately that she was going to have a weaker immune system.

I have no way to get her to a vet tomorrow/immediately, and I only have Sunday off (+ the only vet near me who will even see a chicken doesn’t open til Monday).

Please y’all, what can I really do? I’m so afraid. I was crying while holding her earlier, and I feel like such a awful chicken mom.

First, you are not an awful chicken mim, but a caring one with big heart for your chickens.

Second I would give her enough chick feed feed , water with a little electrolytes and set out a small bowl with grit for her crop. It won’t make much difference if you are around or not.

Keep in mind chickens don’t live forever. Especially not the weak ones. Maybe she pulls through. You can only wait and see now imho. A vet probably won’t make a difference anymore.

Awee, thank you.

& yeah, however she was pretty healthy prior to this sour crop so I’m hoping she pulls through this 🥲 I asked ChatGPT and it said to hold off on giving her water til the morning and check her crop before I go to work, and that’ll determine if I give her water.

This is so terrifying for me tbh

Your hen knows better whats she needs than AI!
AI collects info from everywhere. Scrambles it and does as if it is beter than a doctor or whatever you need without actually seeing the problem.
It can even drive people to suicide (on the national news here)

Offer it, but don’t tube water into her beak.

I have treated older hens who have developed impacted and then later sour crop, usually secondary to a reproductive disorder that slowed down digestion. I never saved one with sour crop even with treatment. I do not recommend emptying a crop, since many chickens can choke to death during this. A vet may flush a crop and suction out contents more safely. Your hen is having diarrhea probably due to the sour crop, and keeping her vent and feathers cleaned with soapy water soaks can help to prevent fly strike. I always provide clean water at all times, even though they do not drink at night. Feeding some probiotic plain Greek yogurt and some egg chicken feed made very wet would give her some nutrition. I hope that she gets better, but sour crop can be hard to treat.
