Hi everyone, my name is Rachel. I'm brand new here so just wanted to say hi. I'm very new to the wonderful world of chickens so looking forward to learning much more from you all, and hearing about your beautiful chickens too.
I have 3 lovely silkies - I started with two, and purchased them from a farm, however one of them was sick with a viral infection and would have been unwell before I received her, so she didn't live for very long, which was really upsetting as I fell immediately in love with my girls - and it highlighted to me how much I have to learn about them. I did grow up with chickens in our backyard as a child, but that was quite some time ago, so I would say I'm very new to all of this.
So I have two new girls, and one of my originals and they're doing really well, but not laying yet. They're slowly getting used to me and not seeing me as threatening, but I'm yet to be able to reach out and touch them without them getting jumpy.
My partner has just moved in with me and thinks it's hilarious how much I adore my chickens and dote on them - he doesn't really get it, but he does like them, more than he lets on!
I saw backyard chickens.com on Facebook, as one of my friends tagged me in a post they saw, as they all know I'm mad about my chickens and tease me about it regularly (which I quite enjoy honestly).

I'm 31, I'm in Tasmania, Australia and really happy to meet anyone, so feel free to say hi and throw any information or advise my way at any time. I'm very eager to know as much as I can, so that I can continue to have healthy happy girls.
    Thanks for reading. :)

G'day and very nice to meet you Rachel. Welcome to Backyard chickens. There is a very good thread called "Australia, six states and one funny little island." Maybe

you can find someone else with silkies there - that is more concerned about keeping them healthy. I'm not certain but I think Australia has the larger silkies in US we only have bantam size.

Hi Rachel, welcome to BYC! [IMG]

Nice to have you here. x2 on sourland's suggestion to check out the Learning Center, there is a world of articles there on all sorts of poultry topics. And ask questions if you need to, everyone here is helpful.

    Have fun with those silkies!
