Hi!

Well they said they were definitely giving us 5 hens, because I'm in a semi detached house but its pretty built up area and cockrals are generally frowned upon..

Definitely only meant to be hens... Think we'll message them to find out what they brought...

All 5 of them are snuggling up together when they are in the nesting boxes.

Well this is an interesting first step into chicken ownership isn't it heh!

Welcome!

I agree that your new feathered family look like Pekins [bantam Cochins] and sorry to say that I also agree you have a few roosters

I hope you enjoy BYC. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun. Unlike non chicken loving friends, family and colleagues, BYC’ers never tire of stories or pictures that feature our feathered and non feathered friends

It sounds like you're getting a crash course into poultry raising. If you need help, always feel free to ask...everyone was new at some point.

Thanks for joining us!

Welcome, you will definitely find the info on the site helpful. Definitely put a lip on the boxes, make sure it is thin enough that they don't want to roost on the lip or they may start hanging out there and pooping in the box. The other thing I picked up on from somewhere on this site was to lay a piece of artificial turf in the bottom of the box first then put your straw or shavings on top. That way if the girls kick everything out, the egg still falls on something cushioned and won't break. This has worked great for me as the girls often make a deep nest that goes down to the turf.
Pic with just the turf

with the straw added. Note, you can see I used a 2x2 on my bottom nests as a landing to help the girls get in the box, and now I get poop in the box, need to fix that this spring. My upper boxes have the landing 2x2 further away from the box and just a small strip retaining the straw and I do not tend to get poop in those boxes.
good luck.
