Hi.

I think everyone here can relate to the last line of your original post: "I feel like I need more hens," a feeling that never goes away!

I, too, hope you can keep both roos. I have only one, Sir Henry, who believes all hens find him irresistible and must be kept away from all but the sturdiest hens.

Since I also lack competent construction skills for large projects, I have been pretty successful buying coops off Craigslist. My buys include a great Backyard Shed Co. structure that TSC sold, I'm told, for about $1,100; it was in great shape and two years old when its former owner decided to add more chickens (of course). I paid $600 and got a sturdy, well-ventilated coop with five nest boxes (only one of which any of the hens have chosen to occupy). It did, however, take two men to load it onto a trailer and four strong guys to unload and position it on the ground.

I also bought an Urban Coop, which in my opinion is not nearly as well-thought-out as the Backyard coop, when its Craigslist owners wanted to expand. That one cost me $200 and houses Sir Henry and his harem of two.

My other two poultry buildings were owner-built-and-sold for $200 and $100 each; the materials alone would have been more expensive. In each case, I scanned Craigslist daily and then spent a good deal of time cleaning and sanitizing the buildings. Although the Urban Coop is my least favorite, all were worth the cost and do a good job of housing and protecting my birds. The UC came with its own run, which at least is hardware cloth; building a run isn't nearly as difficult as creating a coop.

Good luck with your expansion plans, and welcome to the group.

Hi August, it's nice to have you here with us! Thanks for the photos, always fun to see another member's flock.

Best of luck with all your plans, thanks for joining us!

Hello. My name is August and I've had chickens for a few years now but, still consider myself a novice when it comes to chickens. My ownership of chickens was not intentional to start with. A few years ago, I brought my son to a birthday party and ended up coming home with a pair of young cockrells from their recently acquired flock. Long story short, they had more birds than the could manage and talked me into bringing some home with me. I knew nothing about chickens. Suffice to say, I've learned a few things since then. However, I'm still not that well versed. My flock has grown a little bit since then. I later brought home a little red hen from that same flock. And even later, I realized that I needed more hens to keep everyone happy. So, my flock is up to seven. I do intend to get more hens once I have a proper place to keep more well sheltered and safe from predators. I've been lurking and reading around this community for a while and finally decided to sign up. From what I can tell, my flock consists of a Bard Rock rooster (Herbert) , a Black and Copper Maran rooster (Henry), a Rhode Island red hen (Henny Penny), and 4 dark brahma hens (Harriet, Sprinkles, Vanessa and Nugget.) Note: The first three are only guesses on the breeds. Feel free to let me know if I'm wrong. I'd love to be certain. I specifically got the brahma gals after researching the breed and falling in love. Since getting the boys, I've grown to truly enjoy the birds and want to learn as much as I can about them in order to keep them happy and healthy. I've attached some photos of my chickens as well as the little coop I put together in a hurry when I got the boys and the store bought one I decided to get because I didn't feel I did well enough with the one I built. In the future, I plan to get a nice, big coop that they won't be so crowded in. One large enough to be able to expand the flock a little more. I feel like I need more hens.

Thank you all for the warm welcomes and the advice! Callender Girl, I didn't even think about looking on Craig's List! I appreciate the advice. I'll certainly be looking into that as an option in getting a better sized coop! The one I've been eyeballing would run me about $4,200 with shipping and all the little extras I wanted tacked on so, being able to buy used might be a better option.
