Hi! About a year ago I went to work in a customer service department for a hatchery and have become obsessed with chickens! I am still trying to talk my husband in to letting us get our flock started. We have to factor in our 1 year old daughter and our pittie who loves to chase anything that moves. I think my husband's dragging his feet before having to build a coop. I have been coming to BackYard Chickens for months to do my own research and am excited to learn more as I go.

Hi! Welcome to BYC! I think you will want to create a space for your chickens that will be safe from the pit bull. But, really it should be fort Knox if you have predators around, such as raccoons, possum, weasels, foxes, coyotes, or birds of prey. Best to just start out with the biggest, safest home you can create for them right from the start. :D (Ask me how I know.)

Hello there and welcome to BYC! :frow

Yes, you will definitely need to build a run for the chickens or keep the dog on a leash at all times. Most dogs see chickens as a meal, and usually dog attacks lead to death of the bird. I hope you can get going on a flock soon!

Welcome to our community! :-)

Hello! Welcome to BYC!! :frow Every dog is different. You may be able to train yours to live in harmony with the chickens, but you may not. I have three and they all do just fine with them. The run should be secure no matter what your pup does and there is always the option of electric fence. Good luck in establishing your flock!

:welcome

I hope you can get a flock of your own, that must be very tempting working at a hatchery.

Best of luck and thanks for joining us!
