My name isWendy , and I have been keeping a small mixed backyard flock since ‘14.
I currently have a 6 yo Welsummer, & 5 yo Easter Egger- they’re the only 2 of 9 who survived a freak dog attack. We reinforced all fencing and put extra latches on every gate so only adults can open them (we suspect the grandson left the gate open, allowing a stray dog in for the massacre that awful day), and we have also been raising the following chicks we ordered from mypetchicken as day-olds: a Swedish Flower Hen, a Fauvacana Hen, & a Salmon Falvorelles Rooster & Hen. They’re 7 weeks old now & learning how to live in their divided half of the coop. This will be our first rooster, and because we live in city limits, I have to try the No Crow Collar on him. I’m also receiving fertile hatching eggs this week to give incubating a try.

My favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens are of course the delicious, most nutritious eggs around. We also truly love our hens and how unique and quirky each one of their personalities are. Our 4 yo daughter & 3 yo grandson both love digging up worms for their chicken friends. Our Welsummer is a hugger & lets our little girl carry her around and love all over her...
I’m hoping to hatch out some true Ameraucanas to breed & raise our own Fauvacanas next year by breeding them with our falvorelles. But I also couldn’t resist ordering some silkie eggs & Mille Fleur d’Uccle eggs to see if the little ones love having their own mini chickens! Our hens have a very large backyard where they free range under our fruit trees and beehives.

My other hobbies include gardening, preservation of our harvests, reading, running with our sweet dog, and I’m in my 2nd year of beekeeping. I’m an Office Manager at a Landscaping company, and my husband is a Custodian.

My husband and I have 4 grown adult children living on their own, and our 4 yo daughter lives at home with us. Our Grandson spends every weekend with us. We have a very sweet mixed dog who adores raising our chicks with us and grieved over the graves of the ones we lost in that dog attack. Unfortunately, he can’t be left outback alone due to his anxieties, or he might have been able to stop that from happening...it was really heartbreaking. Hi used to lay all depressed on top of the hens’ graves for weeks...
We also have 2 cats. We are truly animal lovers, and eggs are pretty much the only animal protein my husband will eat since he learned how sweet our hens are!
(7) Bonus: I was googling advice on what to dowith dirty hatching eggs I received from an eBay seller yesterday & found this forum, hoping for some sound advice.

Hey Wendy

Welcome from Georgia, the Poultry capital of the world (2018).. Glad you have joined this chicken crazy board.

Here is a quick link to the articles area, lots of info on this forum, just look around. Also if you have a specific question the search engine (top right) is actually very good..
