1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
First time chicken owner here. Husband brought home 10 adorable chickens from TSC after the first week of covid quarantine. Ended up getting 5 more special breeds a week later. So we’ve had the 15 for a few months now. We bought a old farm house last year with an exist-chicken coop that was in disrepair. After a lot of repairs and work, we finally have a adequate chicken coop and run. Today, we brought home a rooster.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
16 (15 hens, 1 rooster)
(3) What breeds do you have?
Not sure about all of them...but we have a few blue eggs layers, Rhode Island Red rooster, a Houdan (I think?)... not sure about the other breeds....will look it up later.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Their personalities I suppose. My kids love them.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Getting outdoors, traveling, camping, and building things.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
We recently moved into a century old farm house last fall. The lot came with a massive old barn, couple of mini barns, and a chicken coop. We didn’t realize the extent of termite damage/wood rot in the chicken coop. Really, my husband and I had no intention of using the coop until the pandemic hit and I had 15 chickens in my home, in a box. He bought the chickens before taking a closer look at the coop. FIL moved in with us (he had chickens a long time ago, he’s almost 80) and we basically have been repairing the chicken coop for the past few months. I have a almost 4 yo daughter and an 8 yo son. We have 3 cats and one dog.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
Researching about roosters. Looking to learn more about chickens.
