HI all - from Chapel Hill, NC. I've never had chickens before, until we got our first batch of pullets during Covid - built our own chicken coop and run. We got 2 Americaunas, 1 Jersey Giant, 1 Rhode Island Red, and 2 Stars (1 gold, 1 black). One of our Americaunas is a bantam, and within about 6 months, the 2 stars hurt her very badly. We rescued, nursed her back to health, and found a new home for the Stars. Our bantam laid eggs for about 5 months, then stopped laying. On March 20 (first day of spring), she laid an egg, after 18 months! She now lays about every 4 days, and she has laid 2 eggs that look like peanuts, and have no yolk inside. Not sure why - we think because she was so traumatized 2 years ago she just needed her own time.
The others each lay 4-6 eggs per week.
The Jersey Giant goes broody ALL THE TIME! She will lay eggs for about a month, then goes broody. We cage her to break the broodiness, but she doesn't lay for 2-3 weeks.
One week ago, we added to our flock - picked up 8-week old pullets - 1 Cream Legbar, and 2 Speckled Sussex. We have them separated and are working on integrating, but they are not ready yet.
Would love to know if anyone has ever experienced the tiny eggs with no yolks. And any tips on integrating the new girls so they are not harmed.
Thanks for the group - look forward to reading all about everyone's experiences.
