Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
I'm glad your hen wasn't instantly killed by the eagle. Do they have any cover from aerial attacks? Do you have a rooster to keep watch for predators and sound the alarm?

We don't have a rooster but have a secure run for them. We have been letting them out for an hour every day to range a bit but they really don't go far from the coop. Guess the outside play won't be happening for a while haha.

First off, welcome to the BYC! :welcome Sorry to hear of your eagle attack...over the time that we started to raise chickens and ducks, we've been raided numerous times by hawks, falcons, eagles, coyotes, foxes and minks/ferrets thus far. I guess it comes with the territory and the best that we can do, is to build up a defense against them.

We use raising a flock to tempt our grandkids to visit more often..lol

Honestly having chickens has been the best thing for my kids, both toddlers think the chickens are the best thing ever. Although my daughter is still a bit spooked by them.

I 100% would recommend a family dairy cow purely cause cows are wonderfully friendly and surprisingly easy to care for. We meant to start with chickens and then last fall we were suddenly gifted 2 dairy cows and it has so far been delightful.
