We're new to chickens and have been doing a ton of research. I'm so glad I found this site. I have a question about who will get along who. We want to get bantams, because we've heard good things about them--friendly, good with kids, but would also like to get Rhode Island Red hens for some of the same reasons and because of the eggs. Thanks for the advice and feedback. Can't wait to get started!

How big is your coop?

If you want friendly, Orpintons. I also have some Wheaten Ameraucanas that are WONDERFUL friendly.

If you want EGGS... Leghorns, Cinnamon Queens and Black Stars.

I have a black sex link hen that just loves to be held and she gives us an egg almost every day.

Seabrights are beautiful banties. There are also some Cochin banties that are really great.

Good luck.

So glad you are here.

Orphingtons and cochins and austrolorps are friendly.

I have had complete oppisite attitude from bantams... very skiddish.

I have read that orphingtons and salmon favorolles are very good with kids along with cochins.

Leghorns and production breeds and stars are excellent egg producers.

Good luck!

Welcome!!

I have 3 Buff Orpingtons raised from just days old. They are now 7 weeks old. Two are girls and they jump into my arms when I open the coop door to reach in and open the run door. They are super sweet. When I go into the run to rake or whatever, the girls jump in my lap or on my back. SWEET!!!!

We also have two plymouth rock bantams. They are sweet but not as cozy probably because we didn't raise them from chicks. We got them at about 12 weeks old.

Have fun....
