Actually, white is a protective color for chickens in the winter, and since we have snow on the ground longer than not, it's probably as good a color as any. There are great horned owls here in the winter too, and foxes and coyotes and stray dogs and martens and......Lions and tigers and bears! Oh my! And there is a pair of bald eagles that actually winter over, because of the ducks that stay on the Chena River.
Lucky ptarmigans, they get to be white in the winter. If we could only train our white chickens to moult out brown in the spring and back to white like those silly ptarmigans they would be the perfect Alaskan chicken!
