I live in central WV with my husband and our 4 children (ages 10, 6, 2, and 9 months). I've wanted to keep chickens since I was a little girl and helped my grandma with hers, but didn't have the opportunity until now. Recently we bought a little house in the country with a few acres of land, and in making it a real home, adding chickens this spring just seemed like the next step
We had planned on ordering our chicks from a hatchery, but ended up rescuing a bunch of unwanted Easter chicks instead. Not quite what I had in mind, but oh well. I'm quite attached to the little things now. We have 7 White Rocks that are supposed to be all pullets, and 13 assorted Bantams (I'm still not quite sure what exact breed everyone is, but have more than a couple Cochins). They're about 6.5 weeks old now, best as I can tell. I'm hoping that we don't end up with too many roosters, because naturally the kids have already named them all, lol! My favorite is the littlest chick; her name is Butter. She's the one on my shoulder in my profile pic
Then my mother bought the 3 older kids ducks for a late Easter present, so we now have 3 Peking ducklings as well. They've just about outgrown their brooder, so we're working on making accommodations for them outside.
I came across this forum several weeks ago, as I was researching designs for coops and pens, and was hooked, lol! There is such a great wealth of information here, and I look forward to getting to know everyone! Sorry it's taken me so long to introduce myself; with 4 children, a dog, 2 cats, a hamster, 3 ducks, and 20 chickens, my days are pretty full!
