I don't have chickens yet only a coop that is half assembled and a husband who is ready to complete the thing. A couple of days ago a friend told me her daughter is getting ready to give away her chickens. She has one big red hen (whatever breed that is?) and 5 silkie bantams. They are all old enough to lay or will soon be laying. She is giving them away for free. Would this make a good flock for a beginner? I know very little at this point. Our main goal is to get good eggs and I have read that the bantam eggs are small but delicious at the same time. What do you think? Thanks for any help you can give me.
