We are new to the whole chicken deal. We currently have 2 Partriage Rocks and 3 New Hampshire Reds. We are hoping to move to a farmette in the near future but thought this would be a good starting point for us. We hope to be able to increase our flock once we move an also add goats and a possible pig. Our goal is to be completely self sufficient from grocery stores. We have 3 autistic children that are learning to care for them along with us. We use grit along with feed. Also pine shavings because of being allergic to hay/straw. My youngest daughter loves to carry them around and surprising they let her. We have found that the New Hampshire Red are more daring then our Rocks and will stare you down and do a lot of investigating. Can anyone tell us what to expect with these two breeds? They are together in the same coop and run.

Welcome to Backyard chickens. I'm not familiar with either breed but, you can post photos at "what breed or gender is this." and get opinions from more experienced responders.

It's so nice that your children are involved with them

I'll try that. My rocks are in my avatar. I'll take more pictures tomorrow. We also bought a coop but I just don't see how it could possibly hold up in our weather even though Agway said it would/

Welcome to BYC!
