After a couple of weeks just looking I have taken the plunge and joined.

Brief History:

Name is Duncan, we have kept chickens for the past 5 years for the eggs but production is slowing down a bit now. We are trying to get as close to self sufficiency as is practical and so thought we would have a go at incubating our own for meat as well as eggs. Bought a Janoel 24 incubator and hatched 7 from 13 eggs (4 were infertile and 2 I suspect I killed by opening up too much to remove chicks and shells during hatching) I have learned my lesson and 8 days on the rest are doing great.

Hi Duncan, welcome to BYC!

I've never used an incubator before but there are a lot of members here that have. If you want to ask questions or share your experience with them, check out this forum:

It's nice to have you here, thanks for joining us!

Hi :welcome Duncan

Glad you could join the flock! Congratulations on your new chicks :celebrate I too have some new chicks that I have hatched that are 3/4 days old. I love incubating and hatching. It's such a rewarding and fun experience and also a little addicting!! I'm one for not opening the incubator after lockdown the only time I do is when hatch is complete or the incubator is fit to burst with chicks. Opening can cause shrink wrapping of chicks. I say can as this may or may not happen, there is no way to tell for sure. I just find it good practice to leave them be and get on with the hatch.

Wishing you the very best of luck with your flock and new chicks. Be sure to drop by the incubating section NorthFLChick has left for you.

Enjoy BYC and all the chicken chat :frow
