*Hiccup Hiccup* What exactly causes these annoying things???!!!!

Hiccups are a spasm of the diaphragm. My kids got them a lot as babies, especially before they were born (that sure looked and felt funny!). While they can sometimes be triggered by something you ate or drank, sometimes, they seem to occur with no clear cause. Doing things that put pressure or reduce pressure on the diaphragm (drinking water, holding your breath) can help to interrupt the spasms, though sometimes, a hiccuping spell just has to be waited out.

They (whomever ) say you get hicups from swallowing too much air. I don't know. But once when I was in the hospital I heard a nurse say if you swallowed a teaspoon of sugar dry, it would cure them.

It has worked for me but, then I don't get them often to begin with.
My aunt told me of this. Apparently when we are higher in O2 and low in CO2 we get hicups and the carbon in the sugar takes care of that deficit. So does holding your breath, but the sugar is easier. I let it melt in my mouth, I think swallowing dry sugar would give me hicups.
However, I get them when I eat raw carrots... but the sugar will stop them. So, I am not really convinced that it is a CO2 issue with me, . More of a herniated diaphragm problem in my case.

Huh?? That really doesn't make sense. You cannot absorb/metabolize sucrose that fast, it is simply impossible for it to make a chemical difference that quickly. There is a theory that yawning may be connected to an excess of CO2 in the blood, but there is no scientific evidence to back that up as far as I know.

Interesting.....

Science is too complicated for me, I just ended up getting a taste for the sugar. I had a grandfather that used to sneak off to the pantry to steal sugar cubes. I'm sure he never had hiccups.
