Racine had returned to his own camp with the mirror moonstone. He'd convinced himself it was to check on the building of his castle. But he knew the truth even in his denial. Ender had stayed in attendance of his guest chambers. That way, if he was called upon, Ender could come and get him. So here he was, sitting at his desk in his tent. Supposedly looking at the blueprints. But his mind wasn't on them. It was miles away thinking about Sorcha. He snapped out of his thoughts at a sharp knock on the beam beside the tent flap. "Enter! " Racine called out, as he sat back in his chair to see who it was.
Thorn stepped through and smiled joyfully at his king. "It tis true! Our king has returned to us! I feared we'd lost you to the posh comforts of Queen Avalon's castle. " He replied with humor.
Racine smiled proudly, as he looked around at his belongs. "What, and leave all this? Never!" He said with equal humor.
Thorn chuckled at his gest. "Ah, but they have the pretties and the banquets at the castle." He said with enthusiasm. He sobered and looked to the desk before continuing, "If I may be so bold as to say my king, you shouldn't have released Andromeda from her vow. You need a queen, my king."
Racine stood up abruptly, in the guise of taking the blueprints back to the table in the center of the tent. "You are far to bold, Thorn. You always have been. But fortunately for you, I like about you. So, I shall address your concerns by simply saying, I don't have a kingdom yet. What could I offer a would be queen? Not to mention, where would she live? Surely not a tent." He replied as he carefully laid out the parchment upon the table. When he finally did turn to face Thorn, Racine's face was perfectly neutral mask, that was devoid of all emotions. "Perhaps it's yourself who is desiring a bride." He countered simply.
Thorn stammered for an awkward moment, then said, "No my king, I remember my vow to you perfectly. You needn't remind me."
Racine scoffed at Thorn's statement and pointed out the obvious to him. "That vow was in a time of war. We aren't at war any more, Thorn. Just as you're all my Lords now. I don't have need of generals any longer. Besides, Queen Avalon is changing her father's mandates. How can I build a kingdom, if you don't have young? "
Thorn was speechless by Racine's response. He'd never expected that in a million years. "I don't know what to say. " He said quietly.
Racine smiled happily and said, "Now that's a first. Now go tell the others the good news. " As Thorn bowed and left, Racine sighed softly and went to get one of his spell book. Perhaps there was a spell to stop a twirl from happening. At least to buy Sorcha some more time.
