High Fructose Corn Syrup & Mercury

I think that this is the REAL KEY!!! You HAVE to read the labels!!!

My girls know that I will not buy ANYTHING that has HFCS or FCS or CS in the top 5 ingredients for any item!!!! They don't even ask me for an item any more if they have not read the label themselves!!!!

Yeah, I have to make more stuff from scratch or grow my own and Yeah, it takes more time----- BUT, I AM PLANNING TO LIVE TO BE 100!!! The best part is that my DDs are MUCH more discriminating about what they buy and what they eat!!! YAY!!

It's just sad that we have to be so careful and that the food companies get away with showing zero responsibility in the matter. When I first became alerted to the issue after I read The Omnivore's Dilemma I was telling my husband how prevalent the problem was on a walk through the grocery store. I told him, "anything in here you pick up will have corn on the label, I dare you to try it!" We happened to be standing in front of a rack of peanut butter and he said, "What about this?" "Check it!" says I. Yep, sure enough, full of corn and soy. Now that's something we take for granted, having understood the packaged food situation a little better, but at first he was floored: "Why do they need to add to peanut butter!" Just like I was today over the salted peanuts.

I bought "naturally fat free" applesauce for my son. I grabbed it without realizing it was not the "all natural" I usually got. I got home and was shocked that that's what it said. Of course apples are fat free! Why put that on there!? Well, me buying it answered my question. It is supposed to sound natual and healthy while HFCS is the 2nd ingredient!!!!!!!

That is the saddest part of this is that we are supposed to be the land of the free and the wealthiest country in the world but these food manufacturers (that even sounds bad "food manufacturers") are constantly pushing to sell more "food" at a cheaper price. In america that equals corn. They even lobby to create their own meanings of what phrases like, "fat free" "all natural" and "organic" mean. These definitions are constantly changing unknown by us. There is no one in a position to look out for the best interest of the American food consumer. As long as it isn't poision, (at least by itself) than it's marketable. The truth is these items with HFCS when consumed over many many years are dangerous to our health.

Thanks so much for the comradery of this thread. It's hard to stay focused when your busy and it's easier to cook something that is packaged but now Im going full steam again!! and I hope that one day my son will be reading labels in the grocery store and say, "mommy, I can't have this one." and know why.

Now I really have to make that batch of granola. My family eats breakfast cereal, so I spend alot of money to get corn-free, gmo-free cereal. It usually means organic or something like shredded wheat (gottal love shredded wheat:wheat, sugar, salt). Luckily my kids know that Coco Puffs or Cap'n Crunch are never going to show up on our table.
