High Heat Index! Baby Chicks not doing ok....

Thank you EVERYONE for the reassuring sentiments and great ideas for keeping my peeps cool. I'm happy to report that they have perked right up and have been eating and drinking like normal! Again, thank you!!

Ok, I spoke too fast!!! One of them is laying down and acting like she was when I first brought her in! We just "force fed" her some water with a dropper and now my daughter is sitting with her wrapped in a towel b/c she got wet. I'm going out to get some pedialite. Do I keep "force feeding" this too??? I'm SO worried!!

Thank you so much for asking! They're doing GREAT! After the water feeding they perked right up but we watched them ALL day and night!
Whew! It's still too hot for them so they'll be staying in our mudroom for awhile!

Good management !!!!! Bet chicks are really feeling much better. Want to comment on the flooring your chicks are on. My friends chick got it's leg stuck in one of those grids and broke it's leg. You may want to put down a rubber mat or???? Just a thought.

I came across this thread, and wondered if this might apply to our situation in ND right now - heat index is about 110 today. Whew. The chicks we have are in the basement, heat lamp is keeping the area at just under 90 degrees (they are a week and a half old). I've noticed they do seem more lethargic yesterday and today, but they perk up when we visit, with cheeping and flapping of wings and such. What are signs to watch for of dehydration? Also, even though they are still so young, given the heat index, should I turn down the heat a bit?
Any advice would be helpful. I'm quite the newbie at this!

it was supose to be high 90's today with heat index at 105. I was so worried about the chicks and momma. but COnsidering they are under the back porch (now turn coop) in the shade.. They seem fine.. I went out a few times to check water. and they were all just running around like normal lol.

I am keeping my brooder box in the garage. We have 2 windows open as well as the side door for ventilation. It doesn't make sense to me to take the chicks in the house, get them used to air conditioning, and then put them outside in a few weeks. What we do, is give them a frozen milk jug in the afternoon and they lay around it and climb on it. they seem to be doing fine. I make sure they have plenty of clean, cold water with ACV in it.
