High protein foods for your birds.

You can buy quinoa prerinsed in packages at health food stores and also some grocery stores. Our flock is molting, and I give an afternoon snack to them of cooked quinoa and chopped sunflower seeds (because they're bantams).

Quionoa cooks in only about 15 minutes, and it's neater to give to chickens on a cold morning than oatmeal, because it's not sticky. We have bantams with feather muffs, so this is an important consideration for us.

Heck, if you compost with red worms, you can haul some worms out and toss them in the coop.

I'm going to try it this year with a cheap plastic container from the local dollar store.

Thanks for posting this. Some of my birds are molting and I have been feeding the black sunflower seeds but they're expensive so I won't buy more. I also bought a small bag of game bird feed which is higher in protein.

Chia and amaranth are very easy to grow, like weeds. Also, have an almost complete protein, which is why quinoa is so good, as well.
Quinoa needs to be washed if you buy in bulk, it's coated with a soap that the birds won't like. But from the health food store it's pre washed.
Now, if I just had more land to grow stuff!

My birds all get a regular supply of black soldier flies
43% protein
5% calcium
7% fiber
10% fat
Makes for a healthy snack, and o ya there free.
Also makes a great fish feed.
