Sometimes, it is more a case of 'children learn what they live.' You can send them to school & have the best teachers there, but if they go home to something totally different, they're going to go with what is 'normal' & 'familiar' to them, thus, passing on poor eating habits to their kids & so on.
I'm not saying that the cycle can't be broken; I know it can.

Just oat meal?

Ok, you don't have to eat a balanced diet to survive, but unless all the parents were eating was also oat meal... why does the kid have to eat anything different? Baby formulas and baby feeds are such a western thing. Kids just eat what the parents eat, in a "pre chewed" form till they can chew themselves.

Getting a toddler to EAT a balanced diet is a whole other subject.

mr. birdaholic :

I think all of them would grow up big & strong like me if they were on a diet of "Moon Pies & Mt. Dew"

Now Sir. Birdaholic, shame on you for steering this younger generation wrong. You are teaching them very bad habits that will be hard to break later in life!

Everybody knows you have to drink RC Cola with Moon Pies! It's an old law in all southern states. You can be horse whipped on the courthouse steps by the town drunk for drinking a Mt. Dew while eattin' a Moon Pie. That's Sacrilegious.
Shame on you! Next thing you know you'll be telling them not to put peanuts in their coke.

Maybe it was because I was fairly young when my brothers and sister started having kids (I was a surprise, lol) that knowing what kids could have to eat came natural when I started working in an infant room at a day care. I don't know about all these new fangled rules they have now for feeding little ones, like no solid foods until after 6 months and then only bland cereal. My nephew had to go straight onto cereal when he came home from the hospital because formula wouldn't fill him up. By 6months my Pop had him in his high chair next to the diningrotom table feeding him parts of his dinner. Mash tater's, mushed up real green bean or carrots, not the pureed stuff from a jar with starch added. Apple sauce. Real food!! My sister inlaw has a food mill that they ran the girls meals through. As long as it wasn't real spicey, the girls ate what everyone else at from an early age. Very few food allergies in anyone, but me.

But then I'm allergic to the elastic in my drawers!!
