High Winds

Today appears to be the first day of spring for us. I will likely not have to go out and collect hatching eggs to prevent freezing for duration of production season.

Shortly we will be getting from really nasty wind from a special direction that makes like difficult. Prediction is 41 mph gust from SW. Whatever the overall speed is from that direction, tack on a good 30 to 50%. Otherwise it is pretty outside after the last pretty good storm.

They have predicted 75mph gusts for us and have closed the highway due to ground blizzards Wind can certainly make things difficult.

We seem a long ways from spring, although the temperature did get above freezing and did not go below zero last night. So maybe that is a sign. We are in deep snow, I am still collecting my eggs twice a day or they will freeze. And we have started calving. Deep snow plowed out yesterday, rearranged today by the wind. Treacherous and tedious, but maybe better weather is coming. They said something about Wednesday, but maybe it will pass us.

Snow "rearranged" by wind is the bane of my existence . Our primary drift has now breached the snow fence which does not bode well for the driveway. Hopefully we can have a bit of a melt down day before it snows and blows again.

Yesterday we had sustained 30 mph winds gusting to 60. This rooster was being blown sideways when he tried to go crosswind. The hens, having less windage, fared a little better.

This is a great photo! My husband and I often joke that one day we will come home and the chickens will all be pinned/plastered against the fence unable to move due to the high winds.
