Hiking!!!

Last year I got sick of bug-spray and started using a mosquito jacket instead. Both on hikes and when I worked at home in the blazing heat. You look silly in it, but it works wonders!

(I was gonna post this last night when you guys were talking about bug spray but then stuff happened lol)

And yeah, going together with people on new trails - good idea!

I own land in WV and it boggled my mind when I saw outside workers wearing these full suits, in the summer heat. Then it dawned on me that wearing these prevented them having to spray themselves with bug spray all the time

I think it would work for adult ticks, but tick nymphs are small enough to slip through even fine mesh. I remember a hike once where I came out of the woods covered in tick nymphs. At first I thought they were freckles, or maybe fine dirt, but then I noticed them moving!!! We could not get to a store that sold deet soon enough. Still gives me the heebie jeebies just thinking about it.

I didn't think deet worked on nymphs, only adult ticks. I could be wrong but I thought I read that somewhere

Google sez DEET does not kill any of them even adults. It just repels them and prevents them from biting. It says if you want to KILL them on contact you can use PERMETHRIN on your clothes. And it says for the best/most comprehensive protection, then your best bet is PERMETHRIN on your clothes and DEET on your skin. There is also some new product that is like a DEET alternative that’s supposed to be less greasy, healthier, and just as effective. IDK. I’m skeptical LOL I forget the name but it is in this article from the AMC which is a pretty good summary.

Btw, I reread the article and apparently this “new” product I was thinking of has actually been around for a while LOL oh well. I still prefer DEET.

And I have WAY too many clothes to send to that Insect Shield company. Maybe I could do just a few articles of clothing LOL

Thanks for the info. And yes, you can put permethrin on your clothes yourself. I do, every year. It lasts for over 6 weeks on clothes, even through washings. You can buy it in the camping aisle at Walmart or any outdoor store. I put it on our hiking shoes, as well. I even have this stuff, that is safe for dogs. We haven't used it on Thor yet because we got it over the winter so we will use it soon
