(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? Yeppers! Yes we are newbies! We ordered our first bundle of adorable baby chicks and keets a little over a year ago shortly after purchasing our first mini farm and forever home.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now? Welp, we have 10 guineas, about 35 adult hens & 5 roosters, 8 teenagers & 12 younguns about 8 weeks old. We also have 8 ducks. (We plan to get about 8 - 10 more! :0) I am now officially (or non-officially, however you look at it!) a victim of chicken and duck math!
(3) What breeds do you have? We have a mixture of breeds. We have Black & Lavender Americaunas, several different kinds of Bantams & Cochins & some Easter Eggers my daughter in law gave us. We have 1 Pekin, 1 Rowan Drake plus their 3 babies (all hens) who are about to start laying. We just added 1 Khaki Campbell, 1 Chocolate Runner & 1 Swedish Blue babies, all females.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? The peace and tranquility it brings me and my husband. We love working on the land, watching life flourish all around us & we do plan to sell eggs for profit at some point.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? We are working on creating a Glamping Site on our land with a Farm Experience. I can't wait until we can add goats, donkeys and maybe even a kangaroo or two!
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. My husband and I work full time. Our plan is to make an income with our land so we can retire and do this full time. We have 7 kids, 5 grands w/ our 6th due this month. We have 2 Rotties & a GSD who get along great with all the chickens & ducks! Oh and we can't forget all of the stray cats who have now found forever homes with us.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I have been researching for over a year and have come across a lot of great advice and help while lurking! I am not on social media but decided to make the plunge here and I hope to find a welcoming community where I can give as well as receive - guidance and help on this journey. We want all the things that nature provides!
