Hi All!

I'm a new member and totally new to raising chickens. We live in Northern Virginia. Our 6 chicks (White Leghorns, Golden Comets, and Dixie Rainbows) are about a week and a half old. We will be ordering a pre-fab coop/run...just need to make the final choice. My two boys (8 and 6) are excited to become "farmers" -- except for past butt. They don't enjoy that. :D

Welcome to BYC!

Congrats on the new babies! They shouldn't still be having pasty butt at this age. You can soak the butts in warm water to get it all off. Dry them with a blow drier so they don't chill. Put some apple cider vinegar in their water for the next week to help with the pasty butt. 3/4 teaspoon apple cider vinegar to one quart waterer, plastic waterer only and change and make new daily. This will help clear up the pasty butt. Even some probiotics in the water will work well too. Human grade is fine. Empty one capsule in a quart waterer, change and make new daily.

Make sure your temp is correct in the brooder as improper temps can also cause pasty butt as can dehydration.

Have you stopped by our learning center here on BYC? Lots of great tips on raising your new brood....

Enjoy your new babies! If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Welcome to our flock!

Thank you so much for the tips. We don't actually have a pasty butt problem. One chick needed to be cleaned up when we first brought her home, but other than that they've all been just fine.

More than anything my boys just reacted to some of the how-to videos I was watching before we went to pick the girls up. They declared that they "absolutely would NOT clean pasty butt!" And then ran off laughing because they're boys and we're talking about butts. :D

I had been wondering about the probiotic powder because I am feeding them the unmedicated food. Now that I know, I will get some today.

Thanks!
:)

Hello :frow And Welcome To BYC! Sounds like you're having fun with your new chicks, no matter which end you are talking about. Good luck with the coop build, be sure to check out the coops section for ideas.
You might like to check out the Virginia state thread for your chicken keeping neighbors, they might have some hints on local places to get coops https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/270925/find-your-states-thread

Hi and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan

Many prebuilt coops grossly overestimate the number of birds they can house. Adult standard sized birds should have 4 square feet of floor space in the coop per bird, and 10 square feet of run.
