hello! i’m new here. As you can probably tell from my username, i’m a big fan of geese! while i don’t currently have any poultry of my own, i look forward to learning as much as possible in preparation for when i’m able to have my own.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
i’m fairly new to all things poultry, and while i don’t yet have any of my own, i do regularly interact with the chickens at the local stables, as well as the flocks of geese and ducks in my neighborhood
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
i don’t have any of my own. i raised a pair of orphan geese and have had some success hatching duck eggs in the past, but the geese were rehabilitated and released, and the ducks were given to the friend who let me hatch them.
(3) What breeds do you have?
none currently, but i’m very partial to canada geese, and someday would love to get the license to rehab injured ones. i love muscovy ducks, and i think bantam chickens are adorable. whenever i’m in the position to have chickens, i definitely want a polish or two! but i’m open to any breed, as long as i get to befriend and love them haha.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
i just genuinely love animals of all sorts, and it’s a dream of mine to be more self sufficient as well. raising poultry would be an awesome opportunity and experience for me!
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
i started birdwatching about a year ago. i enjoy working with all sorts of animals, especially horses, and am very lucky to have my own. i enjoy listening to music, singing along, and playing piano. i love to read, sometimes fantasy, occasionally sci fi, but also tons of nonfiction- mostly nature focused books! i draw and paint sometimes, as well as doing digital art.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
i have two cats, Mango and Thea, in addition to a small fish tank that currently houses my betta, Sashimi, five kuhli loaches (Fettuccine, Linguini, Spaghetti, LoMein, and Yakisoba), a few bladder snails, and a single blue shrimp. I have a wonderful tennessee walking horse mix named Willow, and i absolutely adore her. i’m currently taking a light load of classes at a community college, and i’m lucky to have probably the worlds best biology teacher haha. i plan to volunteer at the local state park and wildlife rehab center sometime this year.
