So, I have a pilgrim goose who I hatched from an egg as a pet a couple years ago. She's just started laying eggs for the second time, and since I found them I want a gander so it isn't so pathetic when she goes broody.

Does anyone know whether an imprinted goose and an imprinted gander would breed, or even just get along? I think I've heard that a bird who thinks they're a person won't breed with normal birds, but I don't know. She just chases our ducks away from her pool when she wants in it and then avoids them.

Next, would it be a crime to breed a goose that's not the standard, and I dunno how far away, who is undersized, has lop-sided lobes and maybe other faults that I don't notice because I've never seen other pilgrims to compare? How bad are those?

Awaiting responses.

You should get her a man and see how she likes him. She may take to him and they would be fine.

If you want to show your geese you would be better to breed geese that meet the standerd to other geese that meet the standerd but that is not always the case.

If you just want pets who cares what they look like.

When she goes broody order some goslings to arrive at about 4 weeks and give them to her. She'll pick a gander out of the group as a mate. As a kid, I had a pet gander that was imprinted on me. I bought 6 goslings and he immediately adopted them. I kept one of the geese that he mated with and they were a bonded pair. I no longer mattered to him.

Hmm...Ok, iffy on bonded pairs not loving you anymore, as my goose is my best friend.

I'll see if I can find out more and then maybe ask the homeschool group if anyone would be interested in pilgrim goslings sometime. Thanks!

I raised six sebastopol geese that I purchased that ranged in age from one day to four weeks. They all imprinted on me. We've have parades going on outside as they followed me everywhere. Two of my ganders know their names and come to me when called. They enjoy their daily chats and bonding with me. Even during mating season my Saddleback gander is very sweet and comes to visit; although, he did try to mount me a few days ago so maybe he loves me a little too much.

Anyway, Last year he was paired with another Gray Saddleback which resulted in a Buff Saddleback offspring goose. Currently, I have three eggs in my incubator hoping they are fertile. I did see them breeding two days ago. So, long story short, yes they will mate with another imprinted goose/gander. At least that's been my experience.

My first geese were inprinted on me and followed me everywhere, and of course all natural geese tend to be inprinted on there mama...
Like in humans you sometimes get a mama's boy or a old maid but usually they forget about their first love, pick a mate, and start their own family. I wouldn't hesitate to try two "imprinted" geese mine mated normally, and brought their goslings for me to babysit ocasionally. Being a 'grandparent' can be fun too!
