I have Barred Rock hens, one Barred Rock rooster, and a half Barred Rock/ Game rooster (long story there)...

I recently had a hen go broody, hatched 4 chicks (5 eggs)..

3 of the chicks, now 4 weeks old, are normal Barred Rock looking...the 4th looks to be white or cream color...Definately NOT Barred Rock color...not albino, either.

There are no other chickens close...my ladies are well fenced in....
so it couldn't have been a travelin' man...

Is it possible that there's a Leghorn or some other white breed hidden in the "family woodpile" back a ways?

Or can a breed of one color sometimes have chicks of another color..?

I've had the BR chickens for 8 years, several batches of chicks, ...never had a whitish chick ...

No...I posted in in a different catagory, and someone THERE said I should have put it HERE....So i did...

One of your roos and one of your hens each carry one copy of recessive white (C,c). White is essentially the OFF switch to colour in the feathers. For that particular rooster and hen (and without test breeding, there is no way of telling which ones they are), 25% of their offfspring will be white.

This is not a breed issue; it is a variety/colour issue. Your chicks are pure or 3/4 plymouth rock (the game cross issue you don't wish to speak of

BTW, there are white plymouth rocks
