Hi I am a new "newbie" to raising chickens and geese. I experimented with geese and ducks many years ago with a mail order of a small sampling of 6 ducks and 6 geese and had a wonderful time with them on my parents farm.

Now, 20 years later, my husband and I have about an acre of land and we want to focus on a healthy lifestyle with fresh produce and lots of fresh eggs. We have a backyard of chickens and we just got a few geese. We've had our chickens for about 6-8 months. First we got 2 hens and a roo. We expanded to 3 more hens after a road trip with a friend who was starting a large flock. We didn't really get the kind we wanted, so I purchased 4 babies, one didn't make it. These 3 gals are great egg layers now. I also had a gal stash a clutch and had 6 hatchlings - Yikes, 2 roos and 4 hens. They hatched December 25th, and are very strange little creatures with bright yellow legs. I've re-homed 2 of the gals to a neighbor with a small coop. So currently I have 13 chickens in just about 8 months.

And I want more!

I have NO idea what kind of chickens I have but I really like all of them. Some are better egg layers, two are always broody so I stash the larger eggs under them to keep them happy and my good egg production in line.

I've been doing a lot of research on my chickens because I really would like to know what I have, and I'd I am really getting into this hobby. (my husband thinks it might be an obsession but he's playing along). I am sure our chickens are a bunch of mutts that at one time were from a line of a normal breed.

I also just recently got 2 Chinese geese, one a grey and the female a white. She started laying eggs and we had about 10 but she was attacked by a dog and so I put her eggs under one of my broody chicks. We'll see. I had to find another mate for my very depressed goose and found two young female grey Chinese. So now I have 3 very happy geese that integrate well with my chickens and graze really well.

Other hobbies, besides thoroughly enjoying our birds, we like our 4 dogs, our two gardens, and helping any strays that come our way.

I am looking forward to learning so much more about these fun and quirky birds!

Welcome!! I do not knowing why chickens are so addictive. I didnt want chickens and my husband finally talked me into getting some, now I AM hooked. I was always a dog lover but what the heck is it about chickens that get everyone addicted???

Thanks! I'll try that link and upload some photos. But its difficult to take photos because they are either really active and the shots are blurry or they are trying to peck at my lense! :)

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Yes, lots of innocent chicken owners start out with just a few birds. Before they know it, it DOES turn into an obsession. Chicken math....2 + 5 = 14.

Enjoy your flock and welcome to ours!
