Hog Rings?

So who knows the origin of the term "hog rings"?

And yes......it does involve hogs.
Do tell

Were they used to identify hogs/pigs by clipping them to their ears?
They're clipped in pigs nose to discourage rooting up the ground.

Also what pliers are best?
Personally only used the standard type pliers. I'm curious about the "jambro" type and how well they work. Seems they would save a lot of time. But wondering if they would be awkward for getting in tight spots.

Bingo! Give the man a cigar! (and leave it to someone from Missouri to know).

There were at least 3 types of them. It pains me to not laugh out loud when I encounter some of today's youth with those dinky little rings in their nose. They should go "whole hog" and put in the real deal!

I see a lot of kids today, that really waste their money paying someone to pierce the cartilage between their nose nostrils.

I'm going to grab a box of hog rings and the special pliers that you use them with, and head downtown this morning to make some money!

If I setup shop on the sidewalk in front of a tattoo parlor, do you think they'd call the cops on me?!

Step right up for the fastest nose piercing in town, cheap too!

Maybe that hog ring would keep them from rooting around in dumpsters, like it keeps the hogs from rooting in the mud. Before I take this business venture on the road, I should test it out on a Guinea pig, any volunteers?

Look I've already got everything, we could do it this morning!

You have to admit, with that fine copper color, that would make a beautiful addition to anybody's face, especially a hogs!

As you can tell in the picture, at least with the hog rings I have, it's practically impossible to get a bite into the small holes of half inch hardware cloth. The nose of the pliers is in the way.

Sleeping on it, I reconsidered, I think due to ease of installation, strength, being able to cinch down on a connection, and that you can make it look very good by cutting off the extra, I would still go with the heavy zip ties.

I think under cover they'll last a real long time, in sun, not as long, but if it's in sun, it means it's exposed already, and easy to replace if and when it's needed.

Hey Howard, after going to the Amazon page to look at your cage clips, I might actually prefer those. How do you apply them, just regular pliers? Are they strong enough to hold cattle panels together? Are they small enough to fit into half inch hardware cloth to attach the hardware cloth to the cattle panels?

Like I said, I used thousands of zip ties on all the connections on my tractor, I wonder how these would stack up cost wise to zip ties.

That's the beauty of these forums! There're a lot of experienced smart people, teaching me new tricks all the time, and their projects are great test labs for the rest of us.

Good job Howard! Once again, I didn't even know, what I didn't know!

Haha, that's hilarious, I'm definitely going to offer all those!

Jeez Moonshiner, you're a marketing genius, we'll sell at 50 least percent more with that selection!

I plan to make a killing, then flee to Russia before the burial notices and lawsuits hit!

The cage wire clips are installed using a special set of cage wire pliers. They are not clamped on......they are rolled on. As such, they are not big enough to wire cattle panels together. That is what they made baling wire for. Holding hay bales together is just an incidental use until deployed for their real purpose.

This guy's got the idea.

Moonshiner that guy definitely gets it, he broke a serious addiction to rooting in dumpsters with that ring! Although at that size, it has to technically be classified as facial architecture. He's a pioneer, that guy!

So Howard, are the cage clips a good solution for attaching half inch hardware cloth to cattle panels, or are they too small?
