to have found you'all. So we are relatively new to this and have had our 6 Rhode Island Reds since March, and we have 6 Black Jersey Giants who are now about 3 months old. We have a shed that we cleaned out and converted to a hen house , we also have a hen house that we used for the chickens and we have what we call a chicken "courtyard" , lol. So the chickens free range all day and then go up at night. I used the term chicken whisperer because my daughter MariLee who is 11 , is just that. She can go out to the hen house and just pick up any chicken and carry it all over , hold it etc, and even bring it to me to hold. They are just so calm for her especially. We have always been super hands on and are out there with them probably 4 or 5 times a day. So I am just excited to hear about everyone else's chickens, and different breeds etc. I am anticipating some eggs, in around August or Sept from our RIR, what do you think? We already have the nesting boxes ready for our "girls". We do not have any rooster's since we live in "town" and it works out this way because it stays nice and quiet ;). We also have 2 red-tortoise's, Mrs. Burrito and Pepe, a beautiful Sheltie named Baby (who occasionally likes to "herd" the chickens into their house, lol, a grey tabby named Ginger aka Gigi and a shelter cat named Highway. I am married to a wonderful man, Juan , who is originally from Mexico and we have 2 children, Shay 13, and MariLee 11. I am a funeral director and own and operate along with my family 4 funeral homes. We have been in business 83 years and our family has owned it for 32. So nice to meet you'all, looking forward to lots of chicken stories! God bless, Lisa

Hello there and welcome to BYC!!

Sounds like you have a lovely flock! Your birds should lay sometime between 5 and 6 months old or so. Keep some fake eggs in the nest boxes so they know where to lay when it comes time. This will also get them to play with the eggs. This is good. This will help them to learn that eggs are not penetrable and boring to mess with. Helps to prevent egg eating.

Good luck on this wonderful journey and welcome to our flock!
