I got my first chickens about a month ago and am already well on the way to addiction.

BYC provided me with lots of information when I was considering what breeds to get started with, in the end I went with some Buff Orphingtons, Rhode Island Reds, and a few crosses of those two with a little barred rock thrown in.

A friend of the family provided me with some started pullets so that i could have a little headstart on the way to egg production. However what started as a plan to have only hens for a small farm fresh egg supply has already grown with the addition of a cockerel to my original group, and 36 black australorp eggs with 6 silkie eggs in my incubator.

If you'd told me 6 months ago I would be spending this much time reading up on various chicken breeds and owner stories I wouldn't have believed it.

The cockerel in my profile picture is Chuck Finley, who we believe is a RIR BR cross, but I'm really not sure. I just know he has a great personality and likes to try and peck dirt off my toes when I feed them wearing sandals.

So after using the wealth of information from all the members here I thought I would finally join the flock and start sharing my experiences, because I am definitely anticipating a lot of poultry in my future.
