Can anyone explain the significance (if any) there is in having blue Magpie from this line? I bought 4 Magpie from a guy a couple weeks ago (2 Black, 1 Blue, 1 solid white ). I’m picking up a pair of blue this weekend that are from the Holderread line. He didn’t mention that the others were from that line, so I’m assuming they aren’t?

Edit to add: I looked up Holderread and found a hatchery; but they didn’t have any Magpie listed in breeds they sell.

They used to breed magpies, but a year or so ago they downsized on the breeds they keep.

Holderread lines are different from other hatchery lines. Holderread, unlike other hatcheries, breeds to the standard and produces some very nice birds. They have general breeding pens and also special top show quality pens that you can buy ducklings from. Some of those go on to be successful show birds. A magpie that they bred took Reserve Champion Waterfowl at the APA Semi-annual in Hamburg NY in May of this year, according to their website.

An African goose bred by them took champion goose at a show I attended earlier this year. An embden they bred took champion junior goose and champion junior waterfowl.

Thank you, that is quite interesting. The other Magpie I bought from him are quite lovely, and very sweet. One of the females is a pretty reliable layer. She's laid 13 eggs since the 14th. Magpie weren't a breed I was looking into initially. I've never seen them at the Farm Supply stores, and Metzer doesn't sell them. I bought the first 4 because the guy was close to me, they were pretty, and he had breeding pairs.
