my daughter has handled the chicks since they were day olds...

she will now get off the school bus 3 years later and call them *GIRLS* and they will all come running down the driveway of they are free ranging

Good advice re:microwaved rice bag. I have handheld mine since day old.Scoop from under front and as they get older it will be just natural to slide the other hand in from back. Just make sure u suppport their body as they get older. I would handle mine freguently everytime I chged their water at least..usually couple hrs at most during the day. Put them on ur chest and let them snuggle into ur neck. They like the warmth and the beat of ur heart. They also will get friendlier once they start laying.

I love the warmer idea... Mine are a week and a half old and they are starting to jump on my finger already... like a parakeet! I found this to be funny. They scatter when I put my hand in, but 9 times out of 10, they are asleep in my snuggle within a few minutes. I am having trouble keeping them inside their box when I clean their brooder though... All 4 of them like jumping out... I think I better use a taller box.
