I was told that I shouldn't let my children hold the hens once they start laying because it could cause them not to lay or not lay as much. Is this true? I've looked all over the forums and I cannot find a thread on this topic. Maybe, I overlooked it. If I did I apologize. Thanks ya'll.

Absolutely no reason 'holding' laying hens should impact their production. If, however, it involves the stress of chasing, catching and then holding it might impact egg laying.

X2,

Improper holding can easily crack a egg in a hen. That's defiantly not a injury you want to have to treat.

Wow! I never knew that could happen! My 3 year old loves to hold the chickens and I try not to let her everyday BC of what I was told not to let the kids hold them often when they start . They haven't started laying yet but I know they are soon. Just outta curiosity how would you treat a internal cracked egg?

It's amazing the stupid and ignorant things people come up with. Of course, holding a hen and giving her gentle affection is going to be nothing but good for her. And for your kids, too. Chickens are among the most affectionate animals out there.

As for treating an internal cracked egg, just hope you never have to face that situation. Go to the illness and injuries forum and do a search. You'll find all kinds of stories about how people have dealt with it.
