i put my halloween babies outside with the banties... who have just recently been allowed to free range with the big chickens... my 1 acre is now a happy fowl grounds... 4 peafowl, 1 pheasant, 3 roen drakes, and... um.... 23 chickens... still 6 more in the house aprox 2-3 weeks old.. 1 due to hatch on wed, and 12 due to hatch with the christmas party... someone lock me out of trades and swaps please...

Wow, that is rather depressing. So far (knock on wood), I have gotten real good hatches with either 40/60 or just 30/70 and that is M/FM!!! Pretty awsome huh? Its just my Serama is still up there with the males. Once I had 8 males and just 2 females! Last time it was perfect. 4 M 4 F : )

It seems I did much better with the incubator than the broody hens did.

The problem now...We've rescued quite a few of our chicks and young chickens from pens which were being raided. So, now the raiders are hitting different pens. We have materials to build rat proof pens in the tool shed, but this week we are getting a little too much work (ain't complaining, but while we are doing well comparatively for a Christmas time, the dead and injured tolls are climbing). I hate river rats.

don't you have a barn cat nef??? if not, you need to get one, if you have one you need to fire him and get a few new ones.. lol....

sorry to hear you're still having rat problems.. shouldn't htey be freezing by now?? i had a mouse that i've seen in my house a few times... i found him frozen on the back porch yesterday.. lol....

I wish they would freeze. I think what really needs to happen is we have to get rid of some of the "piles" laying around the property. Many were here when we moved in and the fault of the land lady. There is some construction type wood and a huge amount of "river cane" from the stand of bamboo in the back yard. That's where the rats are living. When it starts to get really cold for stretches, the darned things even come inside. Now you know the real truth of why we got Maximus. He's meant to defend us.

Outside, we have so many strays I see around that I can't count them and Here Kitty Kitty holds her own when it comes to hunting. They just don't control the problem. This summer it got a lot better and you pretty much never saw any rats, but now the rats are back in force.

I am so loving it.. Nothing yet on the sermas I know 3 out of the 4 looked good..Never hatched sermas the eggs are soooo cute..

neferset sorry about rats at are last place or neighbors had them so we could never get rid of them... I keep 5 cats thanks to my DD thats in Japan we are cat sitting for 2 more years..Havent seen them kill a rat yet. One brought a live mouse in and let it go what fun that was chasing a mouse around the living room..

And my DH hates all cats so he is loving having 5 Thank Gosh he loves DD

Ours also would bring a mouse from outside up to us, as if giving us a gift and so proud! YUK ! ! I thought they were suppose to eat those mice.
