I'm so excited today. One of my pullets laid this huge egg that weighed 2.4 ounces! I've been weighing them and the Wyandottes began laying 1.6, which is a medium egg. When the Orpingtons began laying, they started laying larger eggs, 1.8 usually with one at 2.0. But this one is huge compared to all the others. According to a chart I found online, a JUMBO egg is 2.2 oz and this one was .2 ounces larger!

My girls make me proud :

I just had to brag

Well, congrats & I would have loved a picture, too - was it a double-yolker?

Somewhat on topic: All the eggs I have weighed have been 1.8 oz, "medium". But no 1.7, 1.9, all 1.8. I checked my scale, it's accurate so I will brag about my very consistent hens

Wish I still had that old white leghorns. She layer inconsistently but, when she did lay, she laid eggs that I am sure were bigger than jumbo. Never weighed them but they wouldn't fit in jumbo carton. I have actually hatched duck eggs that were smaller than she laid.

One of my pullets did that last week when I was on vacation.

When I got home I went and asked the hens who laid the big one and no one would own it!!!

Guess they were afraid I'd expect that all the time.

Give your girl some extra treats today!

This chart was posted by another BYC member:

Below 1.5 is pee wee
1.5-1.75 is small
1.75-2.0 is medium
2.0-2.25 is large
2.25-2.5 is extra large
2.5-2.75 is jumbo
above that they are considered unpackable/ungradeable.

One of my Sex Links laid a 2.5 egg last week...it was not long but very round...looks like
she probably might have been squawking big time when she laid it!
