My heart is so heavy and broken....We bought our house beginning of September and also started the insurance policy the same day. A few weeks later the insurance people came out to take pics themselves. We got a letter today stating that because we had branches on roof, "clutter" and chickens they were going to cancel our policy next month. I called them after crying and they told me it was mainly b/c we had the chickens. They are an "exotic animal" and they do not cover anyone with any exotic animal on the property. I regretfully asked my friend a street over if they would be able to take them and thankfully they would...They had 2 already and wante to get chicks so it kinda worked out. I can still visit my babies and still get some eggs. I know they will be taken care of and loved.

Has anyone else ever have something like this happen?? Insurance company said if we got rid of chickens and took care of other issues they wouldnt cancel. It is such bullpoo. My boxer went out and was looking for her friends

New insurance company that doesn't believe chickens are an exotic species.

How could they be exotic if they are the most populous vertebrate on the planet?

you know what's funny...I used Florida Farm Bureau...they couldnt give me anything so they used another company they work with. When I called them this afternoon they said they could try to see if they could cover us. In the morning I'm calling them back to let them know I no longer have the birds and see what they can do. Will also try to find someone else. It's hard living in Florida since no one wants to cover homes here anymore. We got slim pickins here and the biggest and usually the one that will pick you up if no one else will is Citizens and they suck lol

When we got horses, our homeowners policy no longer covered the property. Simple fix; get a different policy from a company that covers what you have! Go through an agent and/or do a google search. Mary

just talked to my agent to let her know that the girls were gone, coop was getting dismantled and having a tree guy come out to tell me what he can do. i wanted to know what trees were a concern besides the obvious branches hangin over. she called me back and said that they were NOT going to reverse the cancelation at ALL. the people in underwritting had told her they would if we corrected all the concerns when she called them the day I got the letter. she had to talk to the actual inspector people to try to find out about the trees. they told her once they found farm animals they would not reverse even if things were corrected. She was just as upset when she told me this. She then told me the other companies they work with do not and would not cover farm animals. They would being the Farm Bureau but there were "loop holes" and wasnt sure. Said she would look at other places for me and get back. I said id love to have the chickens back but they are gone now, and i know they are safe and happy and will be taken care of.

Im so effin ****** right now!!!

Sorry to hear this happened to you. On the upside at least you found early and they didn't refuse to pay a claim because you voided the claim by keeping chickens, after you had been paying for 5 or 10 years. This is pretty ridiculous stuff though.

We've been home owners since 1997 in several different states due to military relocations. We've NEVER EVER had insurance come out to take pictures, or request pictures for the policy, and our policies are generally in the half-mil range. We've always had horses, cattle, dogs, cats, etc. and have had chickens since 2010.

I would shop for another agency.

You should check out USAA if you have anyone in your family that was in the military. You don't personally have to be military, you can qualify if a certain family member was in the military...
