Home made incubators and egg turners

Hello,
Very interesting post. I currently build my own incubator. I have 2 x 40w buld and using stc1000 thermostate. At the moment my old thermometer is showimg 36.6 degree celcius.
Is it because i have mounted my fan right above in the middle of incubator.
Does that thermostat keep a good steady temp? Do the ligh bulbs come off and on without buzzing? I just hatched chicks using a water heater thermostat.....but the lights buzzed and flickered a lot....it was annoying. I might try one of those stc1000.

Yes the light come on and of for 10 sec. According to my cheap and old thermometer it gives 0.5 c difference so it stays between 37.oo to 37.4.
As this is my first time experement not sure.
Also wanred to ask where should be fan mounted as mine is right top of the eggs. I m worried whether it keeps the humidity away from eggs. Plesse any suggedtion

I have my fan mounted on one side blowing across both the light bulbs and it seems to disperse the heat very nicely. It does not blow directly toward the eggs. I think you could also mount directly above the light bulbs blowing downward.

I alwys do not get satisfaction with thermometer there fore i have ordered 3 different types of thermometer and i will run my incubator for a day to see how it goes.
Any other suggestion ?

Would you mind posting some pictures of your incubator so i can get some good ideas. Have u had any hatch from your home made incubator?

I haven't had trouble with the water heater thermostat. I will put pics up later, but here's what I did. I put my thermostat into a plastic recep box (28 cents). I drilled holes on both of the long sides and mounted the fan to pull air across the thermostat. I used the same computer fan that it looks like every one else used. My fan pulls air across the thermostat and out into the incubator. I mounted the light below the thermostat. My reasoning for all this was to heat the air, not the thermostat. The thermometer is not in direct light, it is only sensing the temperature of the air that blows across it. So far, I have temps that of 99-100.

Hi everyone! I have been a silent stalker on BYC for a couple of months now, I finally signed up but have never posted :D I have a homemade incubator which is like a colicky infant lol luckily I am like a mother hen so we work well together. If I had one that didn't need adjusting I don't know what I would do with myself.

I am posting to say thank you I now raise quail because of you all and all your great info! I absolutely love the wealth of information available here, while I can't contribute much I wanted to share that the flashlight on my iPhone 5s is an Excellent candler and my adorable quail eggs sit perfectly on it with my case on. I hope this helps someone as I have receive so much assistance from BYC!

I am going to make a small styro cooler bator. Currently i dont have a job and really i am here all the time or run hubs to work. Would it be possible to forego a thermastat and just be vigil to watching the temp?
And the thermometer/hygrometer i am going to get has a "highest" and "lowest" on it that shows as well so i would be able to see if it spiked.

YES! I use the flashlight on my phone too (Galaxy S3) Works great to candle eggs. I just lay the egg right on the light and it works well.
