Home Owners Insurance

I have state farm in TX and never had an issue. My agent has seen my chickens. Granted, he does not know I sell eggs, but with just 3 I can't imagine it would be a problem.

I found out Travelers said i can have 3,no roosters, and yes no selling of eggs.State farm didnt even ask about it when quoting,so well see.

IMO, these companies are FAR overreaching. It's none of their business if I have a rooster or not, chickens or not. This is to feed my family and you cannot reproduce your hens without roosters. No insurance company has ever asked me about chickens. They'd better not.

Why would anyone claim chickens for insurance policy? They are not let in the house, they don't cause damage to other property or injure people at your house if roosters are penned. There would never be a claim. Insurance has no right to know you have them. Right to know and best of your knowledge is all they need. Heck the last house I lived in and insured I didn't look for the deed to find the year it was built. Stuck with the best guess of 30's to 50's so told them I thought it was built in 50's. When the deed was pulled out for sale found it was actually built in 1908. Who knew?

If one had a chicken business then that would be a separate policy. Selling eggs from house is not a business.

The concern with asking about animals is liability in case the animals in some way cause harm to another in which they would have to pay a claim. That said, I have never had insurance personnel ask anything about animals whatsoever.

I think in my state, selling eggs from your house is considered a 'cottage' business and falls into a different category than plain ol' home insurance. To date, I've never been asked about any animals except for dogs and they want to know specifically what breed of dog (Is it a bully breed?).

They really shouldn't count chickens as a farm in TX! Geez, the appraisal office for county taxes won't even let you have an AG credit for chickens anymore, because they are now an "urban pet."

If they are going to insure you like a farm, then they are, in effect, declaring you a farm and the county rules for taxation, which usually say you must have something like ten acres, to get taxed as a farm, contradict the insurance. I think I'd be trying to make something out of that one.
