Nightshade.......I agree with Bird Brain. I just pulled my 8th grader from public, mainstream school at the end of last year because I feel as though his teachers failed to offer him an education. I sent him to the middle school against my better judgement in the first place. At the end of the second year, I knew I had made a mistake. And so, I tend to beleive that if you already have misgivings about your school, you should NOT send your child there.
However, if socialization is one of the main reasons you would send him there, there are certainly other ways to socialize him. My son plays Little League baseball, participates in a Jazz band (made up entirely of 8th graders), and also is a percussionist with the middle school band. The band teacher there is an amazing instructor and I didn't want my boy to lose out on one last year with her because the other teachers were morons. (in my opinion) I would look into homeschool groups, the library, even check with city programs (parks and recreation) in your area. I'll bet you'll find things you hadn't expected.
Bottom line for me is.......stick with your gut. I didn't listen to mine, and my son lost 2 years that we are making up for now.
I'm sure whatever you decide, you and your son will do great.
