Homemade air conditioner for you coup?

Yup, that's what we did for our coop. It helps quite a bit.

You can freeze old milk jugs and set them out where they are in the heat of the day. My girls lean against them or lay down between them to cool off. Mud puddles and a wading pool are helpful too. I put ice in the waders a few times a day to keep the water cool.

A lot depend on your humidity. I live in dry, so dump yesterdays water in a shaded part.

I don’t do ice water, as I would be afraid of shock.

Mostly, what they need, enough water, shade all through the day especially at 4:00 to 6:00 the hottest part of the day and good air movement.

I have a big cat litter pan that I use as a watering trough. I will freeze a couple of 2 litter bottles of water and lay them in the trough to keep their drinking water colder. They often can be found just standing in it. I guess cooling off their feet and legs helps keep the rest of them cool too.
:highfive:

Yes, it's how they cool off. My girls love it!

I'm thinking about getting them a small kiddie pool that I can flip and refill every day or two. I bought a large kiddie pool 15 years ago that a 6' tall man could lay in and I quickly found out I couldn't flip it to empty it. I had to cut a 3" hole and install cattle trough drain just to empty it. But the ducks loved it while I had them.

So had to remove the fan, chickens refused to enter coup while I had fan going..... silly chickens! Run only has partial shade in heat of day so normally they lounge in coup- well as soon as I removed fan, they filed in! LOL

Well, lock them in. Then turn the fan on outside blowing towards the shady part. In 30 mins time, they will be used to the sound and they'll hunker down in the breeze. The first couple of times a cranked a mower around them they scattered like mice, but within 30 mins they were following me and fearlessly tearing up the bugs I stirred up. They'll grow to love the sound of the fan coming on with a little bit of time.

I've got the fan in the coop not running, put it in just after the gang went to roost last night. I'm giving them a day or two to get used to it still, then will turn it on before dawn one morning and see how things go. They hate change.
