I have one standard packing crate and need more, but they are expensive. I do like the sliding door on top. I can keep both hands on the bird and use my elbow to slide open the door and put the bird in quickly with/out any of the others getting out. As long as the crate is elevated enough to do this, such as sitting on my truck tailgate. Otherwise, if I used a home made crate I suspect I would need another pair of hands to help, something that is in short supply around my house. The short height of the crate also seems to keep bird crouched and at a disadvantatge in terms of trying to make a brake for freedom.
