Homemade deodorant... It's the bomb!

The cream of tartar worked like a charm. My consistency was a little like thick thick gravy, but I used the back of a spoon to apply it I even went like 30 hours before applying more and it held the rest of the day and yesterday was 91. Here in CA we are having a water shortage so I try and conserve as much as I can, however my landlord came over yesterday morning and said my lawn was dying so my lawn got my shower water yesterday

There really isn't a water shortage in America. What we have is a monopoly ran by the utility companies who know that they will lose mass amounts of revenue if the "water shortage" that they've been preaching about for 20 years disappears. There are numerous ways to utilize the ocean's waters and purify it for proper use.

Take, for instances, Direct Solar Distillation. Using parabolic mirrors to concentrate the heat from the sun, the water in a heat tank is evaporated and travels through piping to a condensation chamber, where it cools in to pure water. There is at least one large one operating in Africa at the moment with great success, according to a special on the Discovery Channel a few years ago. There are several companies that have miniaturized the system for use on a small scale, such as a farm or ranch.

Also, think about salt mining. The most common method used international is the in-situ recovery mining, also known as solution mining. Fresh or recycled water is pumped down in to the giant salt caverns and left for a defined period until it is a fully saturated sodium chloride brine. It is then extracted from the cavern and processed further. The two most common refinery methods are vacuum pan refining and solar refining. The vacuum pan method utilizes large amounts of steam generated from the salt brine and then pumped in to subsequent chambers in order to be more energy efficient. The end result is a pure water source that can be reused if desired. Alternately, if solar refining took the extra step to enclose the evaporation area, similar to the effects of a solar still, they could easily harvest the evaporating waters. In both these cases, pure water is a byproduct of the systems already in place!

Ironically, the most advanced and unique process is occurring in Mexico where they are using solar refining to increase the saturation of the sea water prior to processing it during the next steps. From my understanding, using the high solar and wind energy they can generate plus the free source of salt, they have virtually no consumable expenses.

Rant Over...

Thank you for sharing this!! I use 'natural' deodorants, but they just don't seem to work! I will have to try this.

I do have one question though... As someone posted earlier, they mashed the deodorant into an old roll on container and refrigerated it. After you take it out, would it hold together? Or would you have to keep it cool?

Hey silkies forever, I have tried it both in and out of the fridge now. Kept cold, it gives me light coverage that lasts for days I am just doing normal activity levels, and I prefer that. If I know I will be working hard outside though, I leave it out on the counter at 74 to 77 degrees as it comes off the stick much more thickly. It holds together both ways though.

My deodorant hold together just fine without refrigerating it. I'm still in love with it and using it daily. It's such a relief that I no longer have underarm smell. :)

I'm now making other natural things like soap, laundry soap, toothpaste, ect... I'm keeping a book of everything I make. The deodorant is perfect! I'll keep tweeking the toothpaste, soaps, ect until I'm happy with the results.

Who knows, maybe I'll publish a book?lol I already make all homemade foods from scratch and all our condiments. I like all natural and organic products that work excellently well. :). I grow my own vegetables and herbs.

One thing I'd like to learn is how to distill my own plant oils. I have the seeds to grow(peppermint and spearmint). Who knows if there will ever be an emergency to where these things are needed. It's a very rewarding hobby as well as keeping chickens.

Oh, a book on that would be great! I'd love to have a natural shampoo, conditioner, soap and laundry detergent. I've tried a few of the DIY laundry soaps and wasn't impressed at all, but I don't recall a "natural" one anywhere. I do love using the EcoNuts, though, but my wife hates them and keeps hiding them. They don't leave any smell at all, and she prefers the foofy, smell-good crap that masks the smells rather than gets rid of them. Do you have quick links to your favorites? I'm going to have to do some more research...

I do not have any quick links of my favorites. What I'm doing is writing down in a notebook of several recipes of the same product, then making my own. I do this with my cooking too. I keep tweaking it until I personally love the results, then it goes into another organized notebook. Everything is hand written. I've tried using the computer before, but once my computer crashed and I lost everything.:/

That is good news-- that the CO w/ cream of tartar worked!! Love your sense of conservation. ANyway to spill the gray water from a shower to the lawn?? St up a portable shower on the lawn? My brother re did his house to use grey water for the ornamental plants.
